2002: Zone Zeal

In Zone Zeal, two alliances of two teams each competed to move goals and balls into various zones within the playing field.

The Field

Zone Zeal was played on a basic field constructed of carpet and tape which was divided into fifths. Goals were located in the center where robots could move them around the field for play. Zones were located on the field and were marked with numbers one through five.

Game Pieces

Circular yellow and orange balls resembled the dimensions and apperance of a normal soccer ball. There were a total of 40 balls located along the sides of the field in the center zone and the two adjacent zones.

Game Period

Teams were split up into Blue and Red alliances. The Blue alliance scored by placing ball-filled goals in zones four or five. They could also score an additional ten points for every goal made in zone four. At the end of match, ten bonus points were rewarded for every Blue robot in zone one. Red alliances functioned the same way, just opposite of the Blue alliance. Balls were scored in zones one and two and alliances received ten bonus points for robots in zone five.

Scoring

For every ball in a goal, an alliance received one point. For every goal in the alliance’s goal zone, the alliance received an additional ten points. Lastly, the robot that positioned themselves into an appropriate zone received ten bonus points.
