OCCRA 2012 Week 2 Recap- 2nd Competition and Road Rally

Written by AdamBot Student on October 30, 2012 in 2012 OCCRA

The second week of OCCRA competitions and other activities went well for the AdamBots. On Thursday, October 25th, we competed in the second OCCRA competition of the 2012 season at Waterford Kettering High School.

OCCRA 2012In our first match, the chain, which is used to lift the game balls, broke.  Luckily, we quickly got them fixed, and ultimately we placed second, with Royal Oak High School Team 1188 taking first place by a close margin. We also won the technical excellence award. In our four matches, our alliances broke the high scoring record, a record we previously held, twice. Our new high score was 27 points. Our next competition will be on November 3rd at South Lyon High School.

Back at Adams, sub-teams have been working on projects of their own.

The animation team has now started working on their separate assignments. This past week, they were shown how to “rig and skin” an object (adding bones to characters so they can move). Several people have completed their storyboards and concept art for the animation that they’ll be working on – the theme is safety!

The marketing team worked on updating pit posters and creating new ones for future competitions. They got quotes from students and alumni to put on the posters, and have been working on improving how our team is represented by the pit in competitions.

The past week has been a busy one for the Business Plan team also as they worked vigorously on updating the business plan with brand new information. After the team made their updates and additions to the business plan it all got compiled into one document for safe keeping. The two OCCRA competitions the team took part in, in late October, provided an excellent opportunity for the business-plan team to practice their talking and presenting skills on the judges at the competition.

In other news, new students workshops continue to be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school at Adams. There new students learn the skills they will need to be successful in future robotics seasons and in engineering careers.

Walking the plank

Also, many AdamBots students and parents competed in the Road Rally, where they were given clues to follow around town as they competed to get to the finish line first. The winning team, second place team, and last place team all received prizes at the final destination, where we watched video replays of some of the challenges we competed in during the rally. Challenges included fear factor foods, dancing to “Thriller”, finding clues hidden outside the public library, and a marshmallow-shooting contest. The rally helped promote teamwork skills and was great fun. For Road Rally and outreach pictures, click here.
