OCCRA 2004: Tubie Trouble
Contents |
Game Rules
This year's game focused around the "tubie". A tubie is a structure made from three sections of PVC pipe about 8" long. The field looked like this:
At the beginning of the match, human players had 15 seconds to place 4 tubies wherever they liked on the field. Tubies could not be placed on any field structures (the ramps or the arrow), but they could be placed on robots if so desired. After this, there is a 2 minute playing time for the robots to compete. The goal was to place tubies into the holes on the ramp, or on top of the arrow that spun. A bonus was awarded to whatever team's color the arrow was pointing to at the end of the match.
Scoring
There were several ways to score this year:
- A tubie in a hole in the ramp was worth 2 points.
- Having the arrow pointing toward your team was worth 5 points, plus...
- Every tubie on the arrow was worth 5 points for the team it faced towards.
The average match score was approximately 15 points, this lead to several very close matches.
Gameplay
In this section we would like to post some video of matches, if any teams have any video from this season's OCCRA please send an email to Adambots_Support@googlegroups.com with the subject OCCRA 2004 Video. Thanks for your help!
Our Robot
Our robot was fondly named The Low Rider. Our team foresaw the threat of getting wheels lodged in the holes in the ramps, so we designed our robot expressly so that it couldn't get on the ramp. Other noteworthy design features were our forked manipulator that allowed us ease in placing tubies on the arrow, as well as controlling its direction. A picture of our robot is featured below:
How we Did
Our team performed very well throughout all of OCCRA. We were the Champions of the OCCRA competition and the Champions of the women's competition. More detailed results of all the OCCRA competitions this year can be found here.
