The Field

The field consists of an octagonal framework, known as the "Rack," occupying the center of the playing field. The rack consists of 3 "spiders" (tiers). Robots are to hang toroidal tubes (toroids/water tubes) on any of the 8 "legs" per spider. Up to two (2) toroids are allowed on each leg. There are three different types toroids:

  • KEEPER - Blue/red toroid w/ FIRST written on the outer circumference; can only be scored during autonomous mode and cannot be negated or removed
  • RINGER - Translucent solid red/blue toroid; able to be negated, but not removed
  • SPOILER - Opaque black toroid; negates the effects of a ringer (if scored prior), and is removable.

Located at the top of the rack at 90-degree intervals, directly above the ends of the set of spider legs beneath them, are four (4) vision system targets. The targets were most likely added to the rack for autonomous mode.

The Game

This game features two alliances (red and blue) made up of three teams each.

Autonomous Period

The 15 second period beginning the match. Drivers are not permitted to touch the controls at this time. In other words, the robot's on its own. During this period only, the robots are each given a toroid, known as the "keeper," to place on the rack.

Teleoperated Period

The 2 minute period where drivers strive to get as many inner tubes as possible onto the rack.

End Game Period

The 15 second period at the end of each match, in which robots are prohibited to be in the opposing alliance's home zone.

Scoring

Scoring is very complicated this year (well, to some).

Game Piece Singleton 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Point Value 2 4 8 16 32 64 128 256

If in the event a robot is in the home zone and is not touching any element of the field:

Each robot less than 4 inches off the floor 0 bonus points
Each robot greater than or equal to 4 inches, but less than 12 inches off the floor 15 bonus points
Each robot greater than or equal to 12 inches off the floor 30 bonus points

NOTE: THE ROBOTS MUST BE COMPLETELY OFF THE FLOOR. THEY MAY NOT BE TOUCHING ANY ELEMENT ON THE FIELD. THIS INCLUDES CARPET.

So in theory a team could get up to 644 points!!!!

More Information

For more information go to the Official FIRST Website and download the FIRST manual. This will provide a more detailed explanation of the game, plus it will answer almost any question you have about the rules. It's pretty too; It provides colorful artwork of what the field looks like.

How we did

Florida Regional

The AdamBots was not chosen for the top 8 alliances for the Florida Regional. The team was the fourth "back up" team, in case one of the robots was to suffer a major injury. At least we were able to go to Universal Studios!! :)

West Michigan Regional

The AdamBots along with a crosstown team, the FEDs (201), worked together in raising money for the Relay For Life cancer walk. Although the team wasn't picked for an alliance at this regional either, at least some of us got to get on the field and sing "I Built It That Way."
